Moissanite Stud Earrings: What Size Studs Should You Choose?

• 6 min read

Round moissanite stud earrings in a six-prong setting in sterling silver

For moissanite stud earrings, the most popular everyday sizes are about 4.5–5 mm per ear (sold as 0.3–0.5 ct diamond-equivalent), which give clear sparkle without looking oversized. A 6.5 mm stud (1 ct per ear) is the classic statement size, and 3 mm (0.1 ct) is a delicate choice for second piercings. Earlobe size, face shape and how often you'll wear them help narrow it down.

Here's how to choose, what each size really looks like, and what to know about backs, settings and sensitive ears.

Moissanite stud sizes at a glance

Moissanite is sold by millimeter size and diamond-equivalent weight (DEW). Because it's lighter than diamond, a 6.5 mm moissanite "1ct" stone actually weighs a little less, roughly 0.85–0.9 ct, but looks like a 1 ct diamond face-up. Our moissanite carat size chart explains this in detail.

These four sizes are exactly the options on our Radiance Stud Earrings.

Per ear vs. total carat weight

One thing that trips people up: "1 carat studs" can mean 1 ct per ear or 1 ct for the pair, depending on the seller. If a listing says "1 ctw" (total weight), each stone is 0.5 ct, about 5 mm. The millimeter size is the clearest way to compare. On the Radiance Stud Earrings, the size you pick is the size of each stone.

Seeing the difference: 0.5 ct (5 mm) vs 1 ct (6.5 mm)

These are the two sizes people compare most. The 6.5 mm stone is only 1.5 mm wider, but because a stone's face-up area grows with the square of its diameter, it shows roughly 70% more surface than the 5 mm (6.5² ÷ 5² ≈ 1.69). In practice:

  • 5 mm reads as polished and personal. People notice the sparkle when they're talking with you.
  • 6.5 mm is visible across a room, and moissanite's strong fire (dispersion about 0.104, versus diamond's 0.044) makes those rainbow flashes more noticeable at that size.

If you're choosing a first pair you'll wear every day, 5 mm is hard to regret. If these are for events or you love a bolder look, 6.5 mm delivers.

Matching studs to your face and earlobes

There are no rules here, only tendencies that can help:

  • Earlobe size: a stud generally looks best when it sits comfortably within the lobe with a little margin around it. On smaller lobes, 3–5 mm tends to look balanced; larger lobes carry 6.5 mm easily.
  • Face shape: round studs suit nearly every face. If you have a softly rounded face, a slightly smaller stud or a heart shape can add interest; angular features are softened by round stones and halos.
  • Hair and glasses: if your hair usually covers your ears, a slightly larger stud, or one with a halo, makes sure the sparkle actually shows. Strong glasses frames compete with tiny studs.
  • Piercing position: higher lobe or cartilage piercings usually look best with smaller stones, like 3 mm, so the ear doesn't look crowded.
  • Lifestyle: if you wear studs to sleep, the gym or under helmets, smaller sizes sit closer to the ear and catch less. (That said, we recommend taking plated jewelry off for the gym and sleep; more on care below.)

Settings: 4-prong, 6-prong and halo

The setting changes how big and how round a stud looks.

  • 4-prong: shows the maximum amount of stone and gives a slightly square outline from a distance. Clean and modern.
  • 6-prong: a rounder silhouette, with prongs spread more evenly around the stone. Classic and reassuring.
  • Halo: a ring of small stones around the center makes the whole earring look bigger. The Furman Bloom Earrings frame a 1 ct round center with petal-like accent stones for a floral halo.

The Radiance Stud Earrings come in both 4-prong and 6-prong versions, and in white, green or yellow moissanite, so you can choose a classic colorless look or a softly colored one.

Beyond round studs

If you'd like a stud with a little more personality:

  • Heart-shaped studs: the Aurum Heart Studs come in 0.5, 1, 2 and 4 ct heart-cut options, in white, yellow or rose gold finishes.
  • Matching sets: the Quiet Wealth Set includes stud earrings with a halo, alongside a ring and pendant, and the Emerald Halo Set pairs emerald-cut studs with a matching pendant.
  • Close-to-the-ear alternatives: if you want sparkle with a bit of movement, the Celeste Drop Huggies use 3 mm stones in a small floral drop, and the Noir & Ice Hoop Earrings mix black and white 1.2 mm pavé.

Earring backs: what to look for

The back is what keeps a stud on your ear, so it deserves a moment's thought:

  • Push backs (butterfly backs): the most common type. Quick and easy, but check that they grip firmly, and replace them if they loosen over time.
  • Screw backs: thread onto the post. Slower to put on, but very secure, which some people prefer for larger stones.
  • Larger disc backs: help heavier studs sit upright instead of tilting forward.

Whatever style a pair comes with, it's worth checking the backs regularly and replacing worn ones. If you'd like to know which backs a specific pair of ours uses, email us and we'll confirm.

Sensitive ears and sterling silver

We want to be careful and clear here. Our studs are made in 925 sterling silver, which means 92.5% silver alloyed with other metals. The Radiance Stud Earrings are listed with three layers of protection: 18K gold plating, rhodium and an anti-tarnish coating. Other earrings are plated in 18K or 14K gold, often with a protective AF film.

What we don't do is call our earrings hypoallergenic. Sterling silver isn't surgical steel or titanium, plating can wear over time and expose the metal beneath, and everyone's skin is different. Some people who react to inexpensive costume jewelry find sterling silver more comfortable, but that isn't a guarantee for everyone. If you have a known metal allergy or very reactive ears, check with a medical professional before trying new earrings. If you notice irritation, remove the earrings and stop wearing them.

Our guide to gold-plated sterling silver explains plating, tarnish and re-plating in more depth.

Caring for moissanite studs

  • Clean the stones with warm water, a drop of mild soap and a soft toothbrush, getting gently behind the stone where skin oils and hair products collect. Rinse and pat dry. Our article on how to clean moissanite covers the full routine.
  • Clean the posts and backs too, as a simple hygiene habit.
  • Put earrings in last, after hairspray, perfume and lotion.
  • Take them out for swimming, showering, the gym and sleep, to protect the plating.
  • Store pairs together in a small pouch or box so backs don't go missing and stones don't scratch other pieces.

Moissanite is about 9.25 on the Mohs scale and won't permanently cloud, so a dull-looking stud just needs a clean.

A note on gifting and returns

Studs are one of the easiest gifts in jewelry, because there's no ring size to guess. One thing to know before you order, though: for hygiene reasons, earrings cannot be returned under our return policy, except if an item is defective. So choose the size with care. If you're torn between two, email service@furmanluxury.com and we'll help you think it through. For more ideas, see our moissanite jewelry gift guide.

Frequently asked questions

What size moissanite stud earrings look best?+

For most people, 4.5 to 5 mm per ear (about 0.3 to 0.5 ct diamond-equivalent) is the everyday sweet spot: clearly sparkly but never loud. 6.5 mm (1 ct per ear) makes a classic statement, and 3 mm suits second piercings or a barely-there look.

Is a 1 carat stud 1 carat per ear or in total?+

It depends on the listing, so always check. Some sellers quote total carat weight for the pair, which means each earring is half that. Our Radiance Stud Earrings sizes describe each stone, so the 1ct option has a 6.5 mm stone in each ear.

Are moissanite studs okay for sensitive ears?+

Our studs are made in 925 sterling silver with plating, not surgical steel or titanium, and we don't market them as hypoallergenic. Many people wear sterling silver comfortably, but metal sensitivities vary from person to person. If you have a known metal allergy, check with a medical professional before wearing new earrings.

Can I return moissanite earrings?+

For hygiene reasons, earrings cannot be returned under our return policy, unless an item arrives defective. That's why it's worth deciding on size carefully before ordering. If you'd like help choosing, email service@furmanluxury.com.

4-prong or 6-prong studs: which is better?+

Both hold the stone securely. Four prongs show a little more of the stone and give a slightly square outline, while six prongs give a rounder silhouette and an extra sense of security. It's mostly a matter of taste.
