Moissanite Eternity Band Guide: Meaning, Styles and Sizing
• 6 min read

An eternity ring is a band set with a continuous line of matching stones, meant to symbolize never-ending love. A full eternity band has stones all the way around; a half eternity band has them across the top only. Moissanite suits eternity bands well because it is hard (about 9.25 on the Mohs scale) and very bright. The key caveat: full eternity bands are hard to resize, so the size has to be right from the start.
What an eternity ring means
The idea is simple: a circle of stones with no beginning and no end, standing for a love that continues. Eternity rings are given for many reasons:
- As a wedding band, worn alongside the engagement ring.
- For an anniversary, especially a milestone year.
- To mark a life moment, such as the birth of a child or a vow renewal.
- As a stacking ring, simply because it looks beautiful with other rings.
There is no fixed etiquette about who gives one or when. If you are thinking of one as an anniversary gift, our anniversary jewelry gift ideas has more inspiration.
Full vs half eternity bands
| Full eternity | Half eternity | |
|---|---|---|
| Stones | all the way around the band | across the top, roughly half the band |
| Sparkle | from every angle, even when the ring turns | on the top; plain metal underneath |
| Comfort | stones on the palm side can press against neighboring fingers or objects | plain metal underneath feels smoother |
| Resizing | very difficult or not possible | usually possible through the plain section |
| Wear on stones | palm-side stones take knocks when you grip things | stones are mostly on top, away from contact |
| Price | more stones, usually higher | fewer stones, usually lower |
Choose a full eternity if you want sparkle no matter how the ring turns, and you are confident about the size.
Choose a half eternity if you want flexibility for future resizing or you do a lot of hands-on work.
Both of our eternity bands are full eternity designs, so the sizing advice below applies to them directly.
The sizing caveat, explained
With most rings, a jeweler resizes by cutting the band at the bottom, adding or removing a little metal, and joining it again. A full eternity band has stones in that spot. There is nowhere to cut without removing stones, and bending the band can loosen the settings. In practice, a full eternity band should be treated as non-resizable. Wrong-size returns and exchanges aren't accepted either, so measure carefully before you order.
How to get it right:
- Measure at the end of the day, when fingers are warm and at their largest. Cold mornings give a smaller reading.
- Measure the finger you will actually wear it on. Left and right hands often differ.
- Think about width. Wider bands fit more snugly than narrow ones of the same size. Our bands are slim, but if you are between sizes, the larger one is usually more comfortable.
- Check the knuckle. The band must slide over it. If your knuckle is much larger than the base of your finger, size for the knuckle.
- When in doubt, get professionally sized. A local jeweler can measure in a few minutes, and you can email service@furmanluxury.com with any sizing questions before ordering.
Our guide to measuring ring size at home walks through the steps. If the ring is a surprise, how to find out her ring size secretly can help, though for a full eternity band a confirmed size is worth the effort.
Stacking an eternity band with an engagement ring
Pairing an eternity band with an engagement ring is one of the most loved looks. A few things to check:
Setting height
A solitaire or hidden halo set high enough usually lets a slim band sit right next to it. A low-set ring or a wide halo can leave a gap or push the band at an angle. Our halo vs solitaire engagement ring comparison covers how each style stacks.
Proportion
A slim band with small stones (2 to 2.5 mm) complements most center stones without competing. With a large center, a slim band keeps the focus on the engagement ring.
Metal color
Match the plating color for a seamless look, or mix colors on purpose. Our bands come in white, yellow or rose gold plating.
Order on the finger
A common tradition is to wear the wedding band closest to the hand, with the engagement ring on top. If the eternity band is an anniversary addition, many people place it on the outside to "guard" the other two. Wear them however you like.
Friction
Rings worn together rub against each other. Moissanite is harder than metal, so stones on one ring can wear the plating of the next over time. Expect some wear where the rings touch, and plan for occasional re-plating. If you want to slow it down, wear the rings separately on active days.
Choosing stone size and shape
The size of the stones changes how an eternity band feels as much as how it looks.
- Small stones, about 1.5 to 2 mm, give a fine, delicate line of light. They sit low, feel close to a plain band, and stack easily with almost any engagement ring.
- Medium stones, about 2.5 to 3 mm, make the band a feature in its own right. They read clearly from across a room and suit people who will often wear the band alone.
- Larger stones turn the band into a statement ring. They are striking, but they sit higher, catch more often on the palm side and are harder to stack.
Shape adds personality. Round stones give the most continuous sparkle, which is why they are the classic choice. Fancy shapes, such as hearts, ovals or emerald cuts, give the band a pattern you can see, so it looks more distinctive and a little more romantic.

- Eterna with the Luna Oval Cut Engagement Ring in matching plating color.
- The Infinite Love Band alone on the right hand as an anniversary ring.
Caring for an eternity band
Eternity bands collect lotion, soap and skin oil around and under the stones, especially on the palm side. If the band starts to look dull, that is surface residue, not the moissanite changing; moissanite does not permanently cloud. Soak it briefly in warm water with mild dish soap, brush gently with a soft toothbrush, rinse and dry thoroughly. Our guide to cleaning moissanite has the full routine.
Because these bands are gold-plated sterling silver, not solid gold, take them off for swimming, the gym and household cleaning, keep perfume and lotion away, and store them apart from other jewelry. Every few months, look closely at the palm-side stones to check none has loosened. For more on plating, see the gold-plated sterling silver guide.

Frequently asked questions
What does an eternity ring symbolize?+
An eternity ring symbolizes love without end: the unbroken line of stones stands for a commitment that keeps going. It is often given as a wedding band, for a milestone anniversary, or to mark a big life moment such as the birth of a child, though there is no rule about when.
Can a full eternity band be resized?+
Usually not in any practical way. The stones run all the way around the band, so there is no plain metal section to cut and adjust, and stretching or compressing the band can loosen stones. That is why measuring carefully before ordering matters so much.
Which finger does an eternity ring go on?+
Most people wear it on the left ring finger with the engagement ring, either as the wedding band or as an addition to the stack. It looks just as good worn on its own on the right hand or on another finger.
Is a full eternity band comfortable to wear every day?+
A slim one usually is. Bands with small stones, such as 2 mm, sit low and feel much like a plain band. The stones on the palm side can rub against objects and other rings, so many people take it off for gym sessions, heavy lifting and housework.
Can I wear an eternity band next to my engagement ring?+
Yes, that is one of the most popular ways to wear one. Check that the engagement ring's setting lets the band sit close, and expect some friction between the two rings over time, which can wear gold plating where they touch.
