What Is a Promise Ring? Meaning, Finger and How to Choose
• 6 min read

A promise ring is a ring given as a symbol of commitment between two people, usually a couple who are serious about each other but not engaged. It can mean "I'm committed to you", "I plan to marry you one day" or another promise you define together. It is traditionally worn on the ring finger of either hand, and it is generally simpler than an engagement ring so the two are not confused.
What a promise ring means
The heart of a promise ring is in the name: it makes a promise visible. What that promise is varies from couple to couple. Common meanings include:
- Commitment and exclusivity. "We're in this together."
- A future engagement. Sometimes called a pre-engagement ring: "I want to marry you when the time is right."
- Staying connected. Couples facing a long-distance stretch, military service or study abroad often use a promise ring as a daily reminder.
- A personal promise. Some people buy a promise ring for themselves to mark a goal or a commitment to their own values.
Because the meaning isn't fixed, the most important part of giving one is the conversation. A promise ring that one person sees as "we're exclusive" and the other sees as "we're nearly engaged" can lead to awkward moments. Say what you mean when you give it.
A short history
Rings as tokens of love are old. In England several centuries ago, posy rings were popular: simple bands engraved with a short line of verse or a pledge, often on the inside where only the wearer would see it. The modern promise ring is a looser descendant of that idea: a ring that holds a private meaning, worn every day.
Which hand and finger?
There is no official rule, but there are a few common choices:
| Where | What it usually signals | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Left ring finger | a romantic commitment; may be read as "taken" | couples who want the meaning to be clear, and plan to move it when engaged |
| Right ring finger | a commitment without looking like an engagement | avoiding questions about whether you're engaged |
| Middle or index finger | personal style, or a promise to yourself | self-promise rings, friendship rings |
| On a chain | a private, close-to-the-heart promise | people who can't wear rings at work |
If you wear it on the left ring finger and later get engaged, most people move the promise ring to the right hand, or stack it with the engagement ring if the two look good together.
Promise ring vs engagement ring
| Promise ring | Engagement ring | |
|---|---|---|
| What it means | a commitment you define together | an agreement to marry |
| Typical style | simpler, often hearts, bands or small stones | usually a prominent center stone |
| Typical budget | usually lower | usually higher |
| Where it's worn | either hand, any finger, or a chain | traditionally the left ring finger (customs vary by country) |
| Who gives it | either partner, or someone to themselves | traditionally the person proposing |
The practical point: if you don't want a promise ring mistaken for an engagement ring, avoid a large solitaire on the left ring finger. A heart, a double-stone design, a band or a small accent stone makes the difference clear. If you are ready for the bigger step, our moissanite engagement ring guide covers it.
When to give a promise ring
There is no right moment, but common ones include:
- an anniversary or Valentine's Day,
- before one of you moves away for a while,
- a birthday or graduation,
- when you've talked about the future and want to mark it.
Keep it personal rather than staged. A promise ring is usually given quietly, between the two of you.
What to say when you give it
Because a promise ring's meaning is personal, the words matter as much as the ring. You don't need a speech. A few honest sentences are enough:
- Say what the promise is, plainly: "I want us to be together for the long run," or "This is my promise that we'll get through the distance."
- If an engagement is part of the plan, say so; if it isn't yet, say that too. Clarity now avoids hurt feelings later.
- Explain why you chose this particular ring, whether it's the hearts, the two stones or simply that it reminded you of them.
- Let them choose where to wear it. Some people will want it on the left ring finger straight away; others prefer the right hand or a chain.
If you are giving a promise ring to yourself, the same idea applies: write the promise down somewhere, so the ring has something specific to remind you of.
Promise ring ideas
Here are some of our pieces that suit the meaning well. All are lab-grown moissanite set in 925 sterling silver with gold plating (not solid gold), so they keep a lot of sparkle at a modest price.
Promise Duo Ring
The Promise Duo Ring sets two heart-cut moissanites (1 ct each, 2 carats total) side by side in an open design: two individual stories that come together. It is finished in white gold plating and is offered in three size ranges (4–6, 6.5–8 and 8.5–10) rather than single sizes, so check the product page for fit details before ordering. It is one of the most literal promise designs we make.
The Signature Heart Ring
A heart-cut moissanite on a delicate pavé band, The Signature Heart Ring is romantic without reading as a traditional engagement solitaire. It comes in 1 ct or 2 ct, in white, yellow or rose gold plating, in US sizes 4 to 9 with half sizes.
Infinite Love Band
The Infinite Love Band is a full eternity band of 2.5 mm heart-cut moissanites. A continuous line of hearts makes the "forever" message clear, and a band never gets confused with an engagement ring. Because the stones go all the way around, measure the size carefully; our eternity band guide explains why full eternity bands are hard to resize.
Heirloom Crown Two-Tone Ring
For a vintage feel, the Heirloom Crown Two-Tone Ring pairs a 0.5 ct (5 mm) round moissanite with gold accents on sterling silver. The smaller stone keeps it clearly in promise ring territory.
Not a ring person?
The Lucky Love Clover Necklace is a magnetic pendant that closes into a four-leaf clover and opens into four hearts. It is a lovely alternative for someone who can't wear rings at work, and it needs no ring size. For more ideas, see our moissanite jewelry gift guide.
Getting the size right
Ring size is the trickiest part of a surprise. Our guide on how to find out her ring size secretly has a few discreet methods, and how to measure ring size at home covers the direct route. Wrong-size returns and exchanges aren't accepted, so if you're unsure, it is worth a quick visit to a local jeweler for sizing, or emailing service@furmanluxury.com with questions before you order. Remember that the ring may be worn on a different finger or hand from an engagement ring, which can mean a different size.
Caring for a promise ring
A ring worn every day needs a little care. Moissanite itself is very hard (about 9.25 on the Mohs scale) and won't cloud, but gold plating over sterling silver wears with friction and chemicals. Take it off for swimming, the gym and cleaning, keep perfume and lotion away from it, and store it on its own. A jeweler can re-plate it if the finish thins after long wear. Our guide to cleaning moissanite has a gentle routine.
Later on
Many promise rings end up as part of a stack, worn alongside an engagement ring and a wedding band, or moved to the right hand as a keepsake. If an anniversary is coming up, our anniversary jewelry gift ideas may help you plan the next chapter.

Frequently asked questions
What does it mean when a guy gives you a promise ring?+
It means he wants to make a commitment visible, but it is worth asking what the commitment is. For many couples it signals exclusivity and a serious future together, sometimes with an engagement expected later. The ring carries whatever meaning the two of you agree on.
Which finger does a promise ring go on?+
There is no fixed rule. Many people wear it on the left ring finger and move it to the right hand once they are engaged; others wear it on the right ring finger from the start so it is not mistaken for an engagement ring. A necklace chain works too.
Is a promise ring the same as a pre-engagement ring?+
Often, but not always. Some couples treat a promise ring as a pre-engagement ring, a step toward a proposal. Others use it to mark a different promise entirely, such as staying together through a long-distance stretch, without any engagement implied.
How much should you spend on a promise ring?+
There is no standard figure. Promise rings are usually simpler and less expensive than engagement rings, and that is part of their charm. Choose something the person will enjoy wearing every day and that fits comfortably within your budget.
Can friends exchange promise rings?+
Yes. Promise rings are most often romantic, but some people exchange them to mark a close friendship or a personal commitment. What matters is that everyone involved understands what the ring stands for.
