Moissanite Engagement Rings: An Honest Buying Guide
• 8 min read

Moissanite is a strong choice for an engagement ring if you want a large, very bright, colorless stone at a fraction of diamond prices. It is hard enough for daily wear (about 9.25 on the Mohs scale), it will not cloud over, and it shows more fire than diamond. The honest trade-offs: it is not a diamond, its rainbow sparkle is not to everyone's taste, and the setting you put it in matters as much as the stone.
This guide walks through the decision the way a jeweler would with a friend: first whether moissanite is right for you, then size, cut, color, setting, metal, ring size and budget.
Is moissanite a good choice for an engagement ring?
Moissanite is lab-created silicon carbide. It was first identified from tiny natural crystals that Henri Moissan found in 1893 in material from the Canyon Diablo meteorite site in Arizona, but natural moissanite is so rare that every gem you can buy is grown in a lab. Gem-quality moissanite has been on the jewelry market since the late 1990s. If you want the full background, start with what moissanite is and where it comes from.
The pros
- Hardness. At about 9.25 on the Mohs scale, moissanite is second only to diamond among popular ring stones. It resists scratches far better than cubic zirconia.
- Brilliance and fire. Its refractive index is about 2.65 to 2.69 (diamond is about 2.42), and its dispersion is more than double diamond's. In practice that means a lot of light return and noticeably more rainbow flashes.
- Price at larger sizes. You can choose a 2 or 3 carat look for a budget that would only cover a small diamond, natural or lab-grown.
- It stays bright. Moissanite does not permanently cloud or change color. When it looks dull, it is almost always lotion, soap or skin oil on the surface, and a cleaning fixes it. More on that in does moissanite get cloudy.
The honest cons
- It is not a diamond. For some people, the word "diamond" is the point. If that is true for you or your partner, have that conversation before buying.
- The sparkle is different. Moissanite's fire is more colorful. Many people love it; some find it a little showy, especially in big stones under bright light.
- Double refraction. Moissanite is doubly refractive, so in larger stones you may see slight facet doubling when looking through the top at an angle. Most people never notice it.
- No resale or investment value. Buy it because you love it, not as an asset.
| Moissanite | Diamond (natural or lab-grown) | Cubic zirconia | |

| Hardness (Mohs) | about 9.25 | 10 | about 8–8.5 |
| Refractive index | about 2.65–2.69 | about 2.42 | about 2.15 |
| Fire (dispersion) | about 0.104 | about 0.044 | lower than moissanite |
| Long-term look | stays clear, cleans up | stays clear | can scratch and cloud over years |
| Relative cost at 2 ct look | low | can easily cost several times more | lowest |

Size: millimeters, not carats
Moissanite is lighter than diamond (about 3.21 g/cm³ against 3.52), so a moissanite that looks like a 1 carat diamond actually weighs a little less. That is why moissanite is sold by size in millimeters, with a "diamond equivalent weight" (DEW) to describe the look. When our listings say "1ct (6.5mm)" or "2ct (8mm)", they mean the stone has the face-up size of a diamond of that weight.
| Listed size | Round diameter | How it reads on the hand |
|---|---|---|
| 0.5 ct | 5 mm | delicate, everyday |
| 1 ct | 6.5 mm | the classic engagement size |
| 2 ct | 8 mm | bold, clearly a statement |
| 3 ct | 9 mm | large; best on medium to larger fingers |
Finger size changes the effect: the same 8 mm stone looks bigger on a size 5 finger than on a size 8. Our moissanite carat size chart goes further, including fancy shapes.
Cut and shape
The shape sets the personality of the ring.
- Round gives the most sparkle and the most timeless look. The Signature Ring pairs a 2 ct (8 mm) round with a pavé band.
- Oval looks larger for its weight and lengthens the finger. See our oval moissanite engagement ring guide.
- Emerald and radiant cuts feel architectural. Emerald cuts show long, mirror-like flashes; radiant cuts sparkle more. The Lumière Royale Emerald Ring comes in either cut at a 4 ct (8×10 mm) size.
- Heart is romantic and unmistakable, as in The Signature Heart Ring.

Color and clarity
Modern colorless moissanite is graded by sellers on the familiar D to F color range. Our center stones are listed as D color, VVS1 clarity and excellent cut, which in plain terms means no visible tint and no inclusions you could see without magnification. Older moissanite from the early 2000s sometimes had a faint yellow or green tint; that is not an issue with today's colorless stones.
Eligible pieces come with a GRA moissanite certificate. It is a useful description of the stone's stated grade, but GRA is not GIA, and the report is not an appraisal. Our post on the GRA moissanite certificate explains what it does and does not tell you, and moissanite color and clarity grades covers the scale.
Setting style
- Solitaire: one stone, nothing to distract from it. Easiest to clean and pair with a wedding band.
- Pavé band: small stones along the band for extra sparkle, like The Signature Ring with its 2 ct (8 mm) round center.
- Hidden halo: a row of small stones tucked under the center stone, visible from the side. Our oval Solitaire Engagement Ring uses this detail.
- Halo: a ring of small stones around the center for a bigger, brighter face. The floral Queen's Bloom is an example.
- Vintage-inspired: side stones and sculpted details, such as Vintage Oval Elegance.

Metal: what gold-plated sterling silver means for a daily ring
This is the part to understand clearly. Our rings are made of 925 sterling silver, most of them plated in 18K or 14K yellow, white or rose gold, and several carry an anti-tarnish protective coating. They are not solid gold or platinum.
That has real advantages: a lower price, a bright finish in your choice of color, and the freedom to put the budget into the stone you want. It also means:
- Plating wears with friction. An engagement ring is worn every day and rubs against desks, steering wheels and other rings. Over time, often first on the underside of the band, the gold layer can thin and show the silver underneath. On white gold plating this is subtle; on yellow and rose it is more visible.
- Re-plating is normal maintenance. A local jeweler can usually clean, polish and re-plate a sterling silver ring to restore its color. Think of it like resoling a good pair of shoes.
- Silver is softer than gold. Check the prongs now and then, especially after knocks, and have a jeweler tighten them if the stone ever feels loose.
- Chemicals speed up wear. Take the ring off for swimming (chlorine and salt water), the gym, cleaning with household products and applying lotion or perfume. Dry it after hand-washing and store it on its own so stones do not scratch other pieces.
Our gold-plated sterling silver guide covers tarnish and plating in detail, and how to clean moissanite gives a gentle routine that is safe for plated metal.
Ring size
Most of our engagement rings come in US sizes from about 4 to 10, many including half sizes, but the exact range varies by design, so check the options on each product page. Measure on a warm afternoon rather than a cold morning, since fingers change size through the day.
Practical guides: how to measure ring size at home and, if it is a surprise, how to find out her ring size secretly. Getting the size right before ordering matters: we don't accept returns or exchanges for a wrong size, resizing a plated ring usually means re-plating afterward, and rings with stones all the way around the band are hard to resize at all. If you are unsure, a quick professional sizing at a local jeweler is worth it, and you can email service@furmanluxury.com with questions before you order.
Budget
The old "months of salary" rule came from diamond advertising, not tradition. A better approach is to set a figure you can pay comfortably, decide what matters most (size, shape, setting) and keep some money aside for a wedding band and future maintenance. Our engagement rings start from $349.99 at the time of writing. The full reasoning is in how much to spend on an engagement ring.
Thinking beyond the engagement ring
Many couples later add a wedding band or an eternity band to stack with the engagement ring; our eternity band guide covers fit and stacking. And if you are not quite at the proposal stage, a promise ring can mark the commitment in the meantime.

Frequently asked questions
Is moissanite durable enough to wear every day?+
Yes. Moissanite is about 9.25 on the Mohs hardness scale, harder than sapphire and well above cubic zirconia, so the stone itself handles daily wear very well. The part that needs more care is the metal: a gold-plated sterling silver band will show wear over time and benefits from being taken off for workouts, swimming and cleaning.
Will people know my engagement ring is moissanite?+
Most people will simply see a bright, sparkly ring. A trained jeweler can usually tell, and you may notice more rainbow flashes than a diamond gives in strong light. Moissanite is a beautiful stone in its own right, and there is no reason to present it as anything else.
Can a gold-plated sterling silver engagement ring be re-plated?+
In most cases, yes. A local jeweler can clean, polish and re-plate a sterling silver ring when the gold finish starts to wear thin, which brings back the original color. How often that is needed depends on how hard the ring is worn and how carefully it is looked after.
What carat size moissanite should I choose for an engagement ring?+
Moissanite is sold by millimeter size and diamond-equivalent weight. A 6.5 mm round looks like a 1 carat diamond and is a classic choice; 8 mm looks like about 2 carats and reads noticeably bolder. Think about finger size and how much presence the wearer likes, rather than chasing a number.
How long does it take to receive a moissanite engagement ring?+
Our pieces are finished to order in up to 7 business days, and delivery usually takes another 7 to 14 business days with tracking. If you have a proposal date in mind, order with a few weeks to spare.
